Why Flea and Tick Prevention Matters

Fleas and ticks are more than a seasonal nuisance. These parasites can cause itching, skin irritation, allergic reactions, anemia in young or small pets, and can transmit diseases that affect pets and people. Because fleas can survive indoors and ticks can be active in our warmer climate throughout the year, consistent prevention is easier, safer, and more effective than waiting until you see a problem.

Common Signs of Fleas or Ticks

  • Frequent scratching, chewing, and licking
  • Red, irritated, or scabbed skin
  • Small black specks, often called “flea dirt,” in the coat or on bedding
  • Visible fleas moving through the fur
  • Small bumps attached to the skin, especially near the ears, neck, toes, tail, or under the collar

Year-Round Protection Is Best

Many pet owners think flea and tick prevention is only needed during warm months, but parasites can remain a risk even when temperatures drop. Fleas may live in carpets, bedding, furniture, and protected indoor areas, while ticks can become active whenever weather conditions are favorable. Keeping dogs and cats on a veterinarian-recommended prevention plan year-round helps prevent infestations before they start.

Prevention Options for Dogs and Cats

Our veterinarians can recommend the safest and most effective product based on your pet’s species, age, weight, health history, lifestyle, and local parasite risks. Always use products exactly as directed and never split doses between pets. The most common prevention for fleas and ticks is Nexgard, which is given monthly for dogs and a topical application monthly for cats. We also carry Bravecto Quantum, an injection for dogs, which is given yearly.

Home and Yard Prevention Tips

  • Vacuum floors, carpets, rugs, upholstery, and areas where pets rest.
  • Wash pet bedding regularly in hot water when possible.
  • Keep grass trimmed and remove leaf litter or brush where ticks may hide.
  • Check pets daily after time outdoors, especially around the ears, paws, neck, and tail.
  • Treat every dog and cat in the household as recommended by our veterinarians.
